Argument FOR the proposition - Let's not get into the brain tumour argument please!
Nobody worries more about their kids' health than parents and I want to make this statement early in this discussion so that it doesn't get sidetracked down the health risks dead-end trail. I did some research (using the Internet on my mobile phone) and found this article that concludes there is NO evidence that mobile phones are associated with an increase in brain cancer! Yes, it recommends more research needs to be done, but show me a research article that doesn't include this sentence in the final summary! http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/723258?src=mp&spon=34&uac=67334PR. As a parent, I urge everyone to look to the future and the benefits this technology can bring to supporting our kids' learning, not just in their formal studies, but throughout their life! Thank you. Sam Cameron (parent and nurse by profession).

ReplyDeleteHello Jill - your emotion is understandable and I share your concern, but life is a risk and we wouldn't get out of bed in the morning if we adopted a philosophy of avoiding 'taking any chances'as you suggest. I raised the issue precisely to avoid this line of argument. I would never forgive myself if my child suffered injury or worse because I'd prevented them from having a mobile phone that they could use to contact me so as 'not to take any chances' even in the face of overwhelming research and considerable money spent to establish that there is no significant risk of harm from mobile phone use. It is just a dead-end argument. These technologies have much to offer, particularly in supporting our kid's education. We mustn't let our own 'fears of the unknown' stifle innovation and advancement! Be bold and brave - it is great role modelling for your son!
